Everyone's doing a journal.. So I shall too!

Wed Jan 21, 2009, 1:57 PM
Alright so after watching the presidential inauguration (being in Australia I'm not surprised its still a huge event here) the speech included all sorts of rallying, comforting and motivational points of interest, but what will pique my curiosity most is Obama's willingness to take climate change by the horns and deal with it properly.

I'm sure everyone's tired of listening to politicians so self-absorbed, so badly spoken and blinded. (btw... that is not aimed directly at anyone... as of yet *looks around suspiciously) hehe But, amongst all the other things [our economical crisis, the troops in Iraq] I think we have now reached a level where the Earth is becoming threatened by our doing. Every living thing on this planet is provided with the inbuilt mechanics to do whatever it takes to survive. Wolves protect their young to make sure their line of species doesn't die out, camels have reservouires of blubber in their humps to live in an oasis-less dessert, the seeds of the eucalyptus tree only open once a fire has ravished its shell, thus surviving well under potentially dangerous bushfire areas, I really could go on forever here. Everything is just made to survive as much as it can, while it can. The planet included. And its only fair that what we do allow everything to ensure its own survival, just like every human (in first world countries at the LEAST) has the basic right for living and functioning properly in society today. So now, with that in mind, and considering the circumstances (from what little I learned in school, and almost triple that from the internet) we've got shit happening like water shortages, melting ice caps, excess carbon emissions, greenhouse gassing of the ozone layer (thats a scary one that), eutrophication from industrial chemical leakages, rising water tables, increasing drought periods, and a destabilising set of 4 seasons. I don't know about you but... a lot of that was hidden from my knowing under a whole pile of other matters like, oh, I don't know... are we really running out of oil?

Ok so I mentioned the Earth has its own means of survival. But... you do KNOW what that is, right? Consider this: someone's just picked a fight with you. But you're very patient, you know you're more mature than they ever could be. You wait. But they just keep prodding you, insulting and laughing at you and using you up because you're so nice. Now you're going to reach a point (generally speaking) where you just don't want to take it anymore. Its doing your ego a really bad turn and you just feel so run down. You rally back. And this loser just is so shocked he never touches you again, surprised something so witty had just come from such a humble, silent one as you. Alright, so turn this around now and pretend you are the Earth. A little hippy, I know. But hey, I love the deviantart community, a bunch of really open minded individuals. Anyway, so now its like a game: Humankind against Planet Earth. We're no longer on the same side here. Everything we've done, all we've used and flung back in bags of unbiodegradable fossil fuels, is now testing the patience of something very dangerous. Its karma in the making! And maybe this time, instead of a bully pissing his pants and running for his mother, its us, paying for what we caused through basic materials like a limited supply of food, water, wood, fuel, energy... possibly even have caused some tsunamis or hurricanes, which really, really is a serious issue. Life is so precious and is the only thing that, once threatened, politics intervenes.

On the other hand, we are lucky enough to have the opportunity now to realise what effect our activities are having in our world, and the time to make really little changes every now and then. You know, walk instead of drive if you're going down the road to the shops, install solar panels, limit shower time (oh noesss! i hate that one), turn off tv when its not being watched, use those light bulbs that save electricity, but most of all, do some solid research. The more you know, the more aware you can be about things happening in our world today, and that inevitably makes you a smarter, all rounder better person. If you have a keen liking to ignorance, then pardon me, but you've just filled up on a load of knowledge right here =D

So hopefully, I'm not sure what the aim of this rant is, but maybe some people would like to have a snoop around the net, see what's happening out there. Its always very interesting, and enlightening, to fill your knowledge bank, and if possible, act on it. It really is amazing what people are capable of when they put their minds to it. I peace out now to the world will a small quote I thought of:

Only with knowledge comes awareness, and with awareness comes change.

btw> to those of you who haven't watched Al Gore's movie on climate change - do so! its really a remarkable resource of information, if you are interested of course. And uh.. know your sources.. lots of stuff on the net is pretty shady so you could always check the link/company title/just overall genuinity of the article :P

deviantID

I propose one question;

How much do you think deviantIDs affect a deviant's reputation in the deviantart community? Will we criticize or compliment with added insensitivity, or compassion? Humans can't help but judge what they see, what they encounter. Perhaps it is our duty now to contradict this form of intuition, and see what things are like deeply, in the persona of a counter-perspective.
